Senator Cardin of Maryland introduced the Appalachian Restoration Act (S 696), amending the Federal Water Pollution Control Act to clarify that fill material cannot be comprised of waste. This act will make it more difficult and expensive for coal companies to fill in valleys and streams with debris left over from dynamiting the mountains to extract coal. The Arthur Morgan School "Power Trip" was in Washington with Appalachian Voices lobbying against Mountaintop Removal - an unfortunate practice. The coal industry is blowing up mountains in Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia to extract coal. Nearly 500 mountains have been leveled to mesas for electricity. Maryland does not have coal but they use Appalachian coal for their electricity. For more click here.
