The 9th annual Summer
Funshine Day Camp for people with mental and or physical disabilities took place
the third week in June. Camp is held each year in the beautiful Toe River
Campground with over 150 "campers" attending this year.
Folks came from Yancey,
Mitchell, Madison, Avery, and Buncombe counties to share in fun, food and
fellowship with one another. Some activities that campers participate in are,
rafting, fishing, swimming, crafts, hay rides, games, music and lots of good
food; All of which is provided free of charge to campers and their care giver.
The highlight of camp is the final evening with BBQ, the arrival of over 50
motorcycles, fireworks, and a special candlelight ceremony.
Summer Funshine Day Camp is
made possible by the Non-Profit Organization, Friends Across North Carolina,
which has operated solely in the past nine years by the generosity of local
churches, businesses and some grants.
It takes many volunteers to
bring this wonderful adventure to life for the campers of Funshine Camp. "Thank
You" to all the volunteers of Summer Funshine Day Camp and especially to Lucy
Wilson, Gene McGee and the McKenzie's for all their endless work to make 2008
great fun for all.
