Some Wells and Streams are Going Dry

10/30/2007

Wells and streams are going dry in some mountain communities, and that has homeowners scrambling to find water. One Madison County spring that has provided water for almost 30 years went dry last month. That forced the homeowner to use a second spring below her house, but with a smaller flow, to keep water in the reservoir. And fixing the problem permanently will require a new water system. In the meantime, the homeowner is hauling water in bottles from her neighbor's home. Some mountain towns remain under mandatory water restrictions. The list includes Andrews, Cherokee, Marshall, Robbinsville & Woodfin. Meanwhile Bakersville, Burnsville, Marion, Newland and Spruce Pine have asked their citizens to practice voluntary water conservation measures. Statewide, Governor Easley has asked all citizens to cut water use by 50% through tomorrow. Spruce Pine Manager Richard Canipe comments. (click audio button above)
