PROTECT YOUR PETS FROM HARSH WINTER WEATHER
Winter weather is on its way with sub-zero temperatures and bone-chilling winds.
Just as we protect ourselves from extreme cold, we must protect our pets as
well. Needless to say, the best environment for your pet is in your home. If
your pet is short-haired, very young or very old, particular attention must be
paid to the threat of wind chill to your pet. They need special protection or
they will not survive.
If your dog is an outdoor dog, you need to provide dry, draftless sleeping
quarters. A doghouse should be large enough for the dog to sit or lie down yet
small enough to hold in body heat. Cover the floor with cedar shavings or straw.
The doghouse should not face north and you may need to cover the doorway with
waterproof burlap or heavy plastic - tack the material above the doorway,
allowing for the entry and exit of your pet.
Your dog cannot drink "ice" so be sure that the water bowl is filled with water
and checked routinely. Did you know that your dog's tongue can freeze to a metal
bowl? It is recommended that you use heavy-duty plastic containers. Your dog
will use energy trying to stay warm so extra food is required. All animals seek
shelter from the cold, including cats and kittens that may seek shelter under
the hood of your car. Bang on the hood of your car before starting your vehicle.
Remember, dogs and cats crave companionship. Treat them kindly and you will be
rewarded many times over.
