A new home in High Cove was
recently featured on a tour of solar and green homes. The home is built of
highly insulated SIPs panels, uses passive solar, and has a rainwater collection
system. It features local materials such as hemlock siding, locust steps, and
stonework by local craftsmen. The small size of the home required fewer
materials to construct and will need less energy to heat and cool over its life.
High Cove is a new, green community that includes a forest preserve, organic
farm site, and hiking trails along creeks and ridge tops. Development standards
call for green homes that conserve energy and natural resources. High Cove is
located in Mitchell County, less than an hour from downtown Asheville, near the
renowned Penland School of Crafts, in an area alive with potters, woodworkers,
and other artisans.
