For many years this was one of the landmark homes in the town of Burnsville. Located on East Main Street, it's unique design and beautiful architecture captured many people's imagination. Sadly the home fell into disrepair. However now, this piece of the mountains has found a home in Hillsborough, NC.
The Watson-Whitson house was originally built in 1898 in Burnsville, NC by Col. Frank Watson. Dr. Clyde Whisnant purchased the house and lived there for many years. At his death the house was vacated and stayed that way for about 20 years. The house was sold and was dismantled between August and the end of November 2002. After the roof and chimneys were removed the house was cut into wall and floor panels not more than 14 ft. Wide. The large panels were loaded on flat bed trailers and transported to Hillsbourough in December 2002. The house was placed on its new foundation on a three-quarter lot overlooking the Eno River. The house has all original doors, door & window hardware, stained glass windows and seven antique-brass light fixtures.
The house originally had only two bedrooms and was one story but the attic was raised three feet and a bath and a half, two bedrooms, two large setting rooms and a large walk-in attic was added. The house is located on Occoneechee Street in Hillsbourough, NC.
